Pregnancy Health Centre Teaches Husbands, Partners and Midwives About Obstetrical Acupressure
Date:5/18/2010

The Pregnancy Health Centre today announced it will begin training husbands, partners, and assistants such as midwives and doulas to deliver obstetrical acupressure during labour and delivery.

Edmonton, Alberta (PRWEB) May 18, 2010 -- The Pregnancy Health Centre today announced it will begin training husbands, partners, and assistants such as midwives and doulas to deliver obstetrical acupressure during labour and delivery. The training is intended to help more women avoid pregnancy health issues and have better birth experiences.

The main focus will be on helping people become familiar with how to locate the acupressure points, avoid contraindicated points, and deal with specific issues such as posterior position, breech, pain, cervical lip, preparation for induction and delayed second stage of labour to name a few. Not only will we start to offer classes in June for parents to be and their support, but this allows them to be proactive in order to help them through pregnancy with more confidence and ease.

To prepare for the new offering, Cecil Horwitz, acupuncturist and owner of the Pregnancy Health website, is attending a three-day workshop designed by Debra Betts. A neonatal intensive care nurse who graduated from the London College of Acupuncture, Betts began teaching acupuncture to midwives in 1997. She now lectures on obstetric acupressure and acupuncture around the world and has written many books and articles on the subject.

“Our training program, the first of its kind in Alberta is a very exciting step in helping couples and their support person to be proactive in the birthing process. Using acupressure correctly during labour and delivery has many benefits for women’s health and for their babies, and it’s something anyone can learn,” explains Horwitz. "Acupressure involves applying pressure in particular spots on the body. It can reduce pain, eliminate nausea, and help with a number of issues, including breech birth. It can also be used to help women prepare for labour and to relieve pain after delivery.

“Like acupuncture, acupressure complements Western medicine and can play a powerful role in women’s health,” says Horwitz. “But whereas you must be a highly trained professional to administer acupuncture for pregnancy, you can use acupressure after a minimal training period. I’m very excited to offer this training to people who want to help women as much as possible while they give birth.”

Horwitz, who practices acupuncture in Edmonton, Alberta, specializes in obstetrics, gynecology, fertility acupuncture, and reproductive medicine. His website gives women detailed information on how acupuncture can be used to enhance fertility, improve the success of IVF treatments, and manage conditions during pregnancy such as morning sickness, fatigue, and depression. Betts’ workshop will give Horwitz more knowledge in the area of obstetrical acupuncture, covering topics such as safety in pregnancy, fetal development, miscarriage prevention, and supportive care in pregnancy, induction protocols, and the most effective treatments.
