Plastic Surgery Trends Highlight the Importance of Both Innovation and Tried and True Techniques, says Dr. J
Date:1/13/2017

A January 10 article in the Daily Star on plastic surgery trends lists the top five procedures for 2017 according to the publication, with an emphasis on some new techniques that the publication says are becoming more popular. Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., who is known more casually to his patients and colleagues as Dr. J, comments that the best plastic surgeons make judicious use of innovative new techniques while also taking advantage of proven procedures that have stood the test of time, while also being steadily improved over the years.

Dr. J notes that many of the most popular procedures being performed today have actually been practiced for decades, but with an ongoing process of refinement which has increased their effectiveness and safety very significantly over the decades. Dr. J notes that few members of the public realize that the first facelift was actually performed in 1901 and the first breast augmentation was done in 1895. The plastic surgeons adds that, in the many decades that have passed since these procedures were originated, the practice of medicine in general has improved by leaps and bounds, while countless innovations have also contributed to making plastic surgery a reliable way for patients to feel and look their very best.

An excellent example of this, notes Dr. J, was the development of the buttock augmentation procedure popularly known as the Brazilian butt lift. Credited to the late Dr. Ivo Pitanguay and others and first practiced in the 1990s, the procedure improved on earlier forms of augmentation by transferring the patient’s own body fat instead of using synthetic implants. Dr. J says that the procedure offered two major improvements. First, it allowed plastic surgeons to more easily sculpt a more attractive backside that was more natural in appearance. Second, it reduced the occurrence of complications relating to infections.

While such improvements have been ongoing, Dr. J notes that many entirely new procedures have been developed over that time which have helped a great many people and provided them with more options in terms of improving their appearance. At the same time, Dr. J notes, these newer procedures are not necessarily better than older techniques, but their benefit is that they offer patients a greater selection of options. He notes, for example that such relatively recent injectable-based procedures as Botox can definitely make a patient’s facial appearance more youthful and most patients are delighted with the results. He also notes, however, that these non-surgical procedures typically offer outcomes that might last for relatively brief periods compared to a traditional facelift, but each procedure definitely has its place depending on the needs of the patient.
