Plastic Bag Bans, Bag Charges, and a New Solution for Controlling Bag Waste

All types of bags have their negative impact on our environment. They use energy and natural resources for manufacturing, release pollutants into our air, land and water, and linger in our landfills. They choke our wildlife and get into our food chain. With global estimates approaching 1 trillion new plastic bags used per year, any viable solution for bag waste reduction must include fostering sustainable behaviors among consumers. It’s become increasingly important for consumers to take more responsibility, learning to value and take care of their bags, and reuse them safely.

An ongoing study of shoppers’ habits reveals that on average, only 10-12% of shoppers use cloth bags, and less than 1% reuse their paper/plastic bags for shopping. Many shoppers complain that they forget their cloth bags, or that they’re awkward and heavy to carry when filled with purchases. Shoppers often have to compensate with new paper/plastic bags from the store when they buy more than they anticipated. All too frequently, perfectly good paper and plastic bags are thrown away to control bag clutter in people's homes.

The thoughtful design of the SackPack addresses these issues. This colorful bag carrier holds multiple paper, cloth and plastic bags, keeping them organized and accessible on any shopping cart, and giving consumers appropriate options for different bagging needs. Shoppers have plenty of bags on hand, and don’t require new bags from the store until a bag breaks and needs replacing. This helps them reduce their personal bag consumption.

The SackPack design offers organization, convenience, cleanliness and safety, which makes it the ideal shopping companion. Attaching securely to any shopping cart handlebar, it gives shoppers complete handlebar coverage with a clean, germ-free grabbing surface. The large zippered pocket keeps personal items hidden and secure, and gives shoppers the option of leaving their purse in the car. The SackPack hangs on the back of a car headrest, making it easy to see and remember when getting out of the car.
