3 out of 4 Slept Better on New Sleep Better(TM) Pillows

PILLOW, Pa., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to test the connection between a new, quality bed pillow and a good night's sleep the more than 300 townspeople of Pillow, Pa. let go of one of their most personal possessions as part of the Great American Sleep Better(TM) Project.

Residents of this central Pennsylvania bedroom community hadn't given much thought to their pillows before, despite the town's name. But during the Sleep Better(TM) Project, they experienced first hand the connection between a better pillow, better sleep and a better quality of life. The following results were reported:

Of the more than 300 participants in the Great American Sleep Better Project -

76% slept better on their new pillow

69% woke up feeling more rested

72% had less neck/back pain

54% had fewer headaches

66% felt more rested/energized

86% will continue using their new pillow

The challenge came from Carpenter Co., maker of pillows with the Sleep Better(TM) seal. The Great American Sleep Better(TM) Project is part of Carpenter Co.'s educational campaign to teach Americans the importance of using the right pillow for getting a better night's sleep. It's also the first time an entire town has gotten new pillows.

"We are very happy with these results," said Dan Schecter, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Carpenter Co. "The individuals who go on using their Sleep Better pillows will see even more improved results in week two and beyond as their bodies continue to adjust to their new pillow. We are thrilled that Carpenter Co. has had such a positive impact on this wonderful community."

The Project began on Tuesday, September 4, 2007, when residents of Pillow completed the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and took their Zzzz Score(TM) on http://www.sleepbetter.org to learn their personal sleep profiles. The Zzzz Score(TM) test recommended the type of pillow each participant in the Sleep Better Project should use during The Project.

"The Project generated a lot of excitement in Pillow and in surrounding communities," said Todd Laudenslager, mayor of Pillow. "This is very much a bedroom community -- we have a lot of residents who have long commutes and are very early risers. The Sleep Better Project has showed us that making a small change, like replacing our pillows, can have a very big impact in our daily lives."

Participants were asked to sleep on their new pillows for the following week, keeping a daily journal to record their impressions about the new pillows and the quality of their sleep those nights.

At the end of The Project, participants were asked to test their Epworth Sleepiness Scale again to determine if they were less sleepy during the day when sleeping on the new pillow at night and to complete a Personal Experience Questionnaire.

Dr. Michael J, Breus, board certified sleep specialist and author of Good Night: The Sleep Doctor's 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health, says Carpenter Co.'s Sleep Better Project is a great example for others to follow. "Replacing your bed pillow with one that is specially suited for you as an individual is one of the best and easiest things you can do to ensure a quality night's sleep."

"We were amazed at how many people in Pillow suffered from neck and back pain. After taking their Zzzz Score test and outfitting them with a pillow that improves spinal neck alignment, participants returned at the end of The Project with significantly reduced back pain," said Dr. Breus. "There are some very simple and useful lessons learned from the example set during The Great American Sleep Better Project in Pillow, PA."

Carpenter Co. has been contributing to America's comfort for over 50 years in the mattress, furniture and carpet cushion industries. The company is the world's largest maker of comfort cushioning products. Carpenter Co.'s mission is to continue to develop new products based on scientific research and development that meet their high standards as well as those of their customers and consumers. The Sleep Better(TM) seal was developed as a way for consumers to easily find these high-quality sleep products at their local retailers.
