Pharmacies Use Online Database to Stop the Sale of Illegal Amounts of Key Ingredient Used to Make Methamphetamines
Date:9/18/2009

Most pharmacies in across the country use LeadsOnlabs to easily identify customers attempting to purchase illegal amounts of ephedrine and stop meth abuse.

Dallas (Vocus) September 18, 2009 -- LeadsOnlabs, an online database that tracks purchases of ingredients often used to make methamphetamine, is now being used by pharmacies nationwide to help put a stop to meth abuse. The state of Arkansas requires that every pharmacy in the state use the system and the state has seen a drastic decrease in meth abuse. Missouri leads the nation in meth and meth lab busts. LeadsOnlabs is working with law enforcement agencies in that state to implement the system.

The federal Combat Meth Act requires pharmacies to limit access to, and record sales of, over-the-counter products containing the methamphetamine ingredients such as ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine. Most tracking systems are handwritten, cumbersome, and not effective because of the inability for retail stores to easily share that information. LeadsOnlabs instantaneously records purchase amounts of these ingredients. The real-time database can be accessed by any retail store in the United States that subscribes to the system.

With the relatively low costs and easy accessibility of the allergy medicines, meth abusers often attempt to purchase many packages of the pills at one time in order to make large amounts of methamphetamines. The law states that no one person can purchase more than 3.6 grams per day, or 7.5 grams per 30-day period. The LeadsOnlabs system can instantly inform pharmacies if a customer has purchased more than the legal amount. With the simple click on a computer, LeadsOnlabs helps pharmacies become a major component in the fight against meth abuse. LeadsOnlabs stops meth cooks from going store to store to store buying meth ingredients until they had enough to create a batch.

According to the National Association of Counties, and reported by the Meth Project Foundation, the majority of U.S. counties report that Meth is the most serious drug problem--more than cocaine and marijuana combined.

LeadsOnline is the nation's largest online investigative system used by more than 3,000 law enforcement agencies to recover stolen property and solve crimes. Each day, millions of items are added to the LeadsOnline database by businesses including second-hand stores, scrap metal recyclers, pawnshops, and Internet drop-off stores across all 50 states. Those records are instantly available to law enforcement agencies, meaning crimes can be solved in seconds, not months. The LeadsOnline system, compatible with the NCIC, serves as an indispensible, efficient, and money-saving resource for detectives because it provides a cross-jurisdictional, instantaneous, and accurate database that stops criminals from escaping detection by selling stolen items in another city. An official eBay partner, LeadsOnline helps prevent illegal transactions on the eBay website by giving law enforcement access to the world's largest online marketplace through automatic upload of all eBay transactions into the LeadsOnline database. LeadsOnline also includes LeadsOnlabs, a system for tracking those involved in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamines; a Metal Theft Investigation System designed to track copper and other metal thefts; and cross-checks names of pawn customers against the OFAC SDN list of known terrorists and narcotics traffickers. Each year, LeadsOnline is credited with recovering millions of dollars in stolen goods and solving thousands of crimes that are often associated with bigger crimes, such as homicide, identity theft, and arson. Based in Dallas and led by President and CEO Dave Finley, LeadsOnline works with thousands of agencies throughout the country, including the New York Police Department, the Dallas Police Department, and the San Francisco Police Department. www.leadsonline.com
