Pew Report: Georgia Off Track in Providing Children with Dental Health Care They Need
Date:2/22/2010

n Pew's analysis.

The state does not reimburse primary care physicians for preventive dental health care, a measure that would allow more children to receive care. While its sealant programs reach at least one quarter of high-risk schools, unnecessarily restrictive rules governing hygienists working in those programs are among the most stringent in the nation. Georgia does provide fluoridated water to nearly 96 percent of its population on community water systems and exceeds the national average for the rate of Medicaid-enrolled children who received dental care in 2007.

"Georgia policy makers are doing well but should do more to expand dental care to reach more children," said Shelly Gehshan, director of the Pew Children's Dental Campaign. "By enacting a handful of effective policies, Georgia can help eliminate the long-term health and economic consequences of untreated dental disease among kids."

February is National Children's Dental Health Month. Nationwide, an estimated one in five children, or 17 million, goes without dental care each year and two thirds of states do not have key policies in place to ensure proper dental health and access to care for children.
