Performance Rehabilitation and Integrated Medicine in Watchung, NJ Introduces Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy for Treatment of Chronic Pain
Date:12/29/2013

Watchung, New Jersey (PRWEB) December 29, 2013

According to recent studies, 50 percent of Americans deal with chronic pain of some sort, defined as pain that extends beyond normal healing time. Performance Rehabilitation and Integrated Medicine in Watchung, New Jersey recently introduced a new treatment that is helping local patients finally discover relief from chronic pain naturally, without surgery or medications.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy, commonly referred to as P.R.P, is one of the latest advances in holistic treatments for patients dealing with chronic pain in their knees, hips, back, and other joints. The treatment uses the patient’s own blood cells to accelerate healing in the area where they are experiencing chronic pain.

“Many of the patients we see have been told that surgery or lifetime medication is the only solution for the pain they experience each day, but the P.R.P. therapy we offer is completely changing that notion,” said Dr. Joseph Mejia, Medical Director of Performance Rehabilitation and Integrated Medicine. “With this treatment, we’re helping patients discover that they don’t have to be limited by chronic pain for the rest of their lives.”

Throughout the past two decades, extensive research has been done on the effect of blood platelets in the healing process. Studies have shown that when activated in the body, platelets release healing proteins that speed up the body’s natural process of recovery.

The P.R.P process involves extracting a portion of the patient’s blood and using a centrifuge to separate a concentrated mix of plasma cells from the other elements of the blood. The concentrated plasma is then injected into the area that is causing the pain, which speeds the healing of the surrounding tendons, joints, and muscles. The entire process takes approximately 1-2 hours and is performed safely at the Performance Rehab medical office. Patients are able to receive up to three injections within a six-month time frame, but many patients experience dramatic results after just one or two treatments. Six to eight weeks of post procedure rehab is also necessary to experience the full benefit and restore full function.

P.R.P. has shown to be effective in relieving pain from osteoarthritis, chronic plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, tendonitis, ACL injuries, ligament sprains, and much more. In addition to relieving pain, it eliminates the painful recovery from surgery, as well as the hassle and possibly addicting nature of prescription drugs. Performance Rehabilitation is one of the only medical centers in the local Watchung area that offers this treatment.

The team at Performance Rehabilitation and Integrated Medicine is made up of medical doctors, professional chiropractors, physical therapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, and nurses who are committed to helping their patients find relief from chronic pain.
