ils that are the most abundantly consumed items in the American diet. When those two ingredients are combined in the diet, they can increase the production of toxic fat that can activates genes in those who are genetically predisposed to become obese," he said.

Approximately 33 percent of American adults have such genes, he noted.

"A recent article in Jan. 20, 2010, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that nearly everyone in America who may have a genetic pre-disposition to become obese has already done so," he noted. "The Perfect Nutritional Storm can be reversed by addressing its root cause: Increased silent inflammation generated by increased toxic fat levels in Americans. The question is whether or not Americans will follow anti-inflammatory diets for a lifetime. That is not a political question, but a personal one," he said.

In addressing the 92nd Street Y, Dr. Sears joined a distinguished list of Y speakers, including entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates, directors Oliver Stone and Francis Ford Coppola, former U.K. Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher, entertainers such as Paul McCartney and Robert Redford, authors from T.S. Eliot to Norman Mailer, and an array of scientists and world l
