Zone diet creator Dr. Barry Sears says, "Health-care reform has to begin in the kitchen. The Perfect Nutritional Storm can be reversed by addressing its root cause: Increased silent inflammation generated by increased toxic fat levels in Americans."
New York (PRWEB) January 26, 2010 -- America is in the midst of a "Perfect Nutritional Storm," according to Dr. Barry Sears, bestselling author of The Zone.
In a major address at New York City's famed 92nd Street Y, Dr. Sears said, "The current congressional health-reform debate is similar to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Without a significant reduction of low-level chronic inflammation caused by our current diets, our health costs continue to spiral out of control."
"Health-care reform has to begin in the kitchen, because of the hormonal impact of food and how these hormones can alter gene expression. We need to reverse our current pro-inflammatory trend with anti-inflammatory diets, such as the Zone Diet," he added.
"Today's primary health-care cost drivers are diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's. All are ultimately caused by diet-induced silent inflammation," Dr. Sears said, touching on the foundation of his latest book, "Toxic Fat."
The Perfect Nutritional Storm that Dr. Sears refers to has been caused to a great degree by government subsidies (approximately $20 billion per year) for corn and soybean crops.
"The result is a glut of cheap refined carbohydrates and vegetable oils that are the most abundantly consumed items in the American diet. When those two ingredients are combined in the diet, they can increase the production of toxic fat that can activates genes in those who are genetically predisposed to become obese," he said.
Approximately 33 percent of American adults have such genes, he noted.
"A recent article in Jan. 20, 2010, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that nearly everyone in America who may have a genetic pre-disposition to become obese has already done so," he noted. "As long as silent inflammation persists in their bodies to activate these genes, they will find it very difficult to lose weight in spite of eating less or exercising more," Dr. Sears said.
"Health costs are ultimately driven by a very simple equation. Health-care costs equal the percent of the population that is obese times the percent of the population who are older than 65. With 77 million baby boomers (of which 33 percent are currently obese), health-care costs will begin to explode beginning in 2011 when the first of these baby boomers begins to reach age 65."
But, Dr. Sears stressed, it doesn't have to that way.
"The Perfect Nutritional Storm can be reversed by addressing its root cause: Increased silent inflammation generated by increased toxic fat levels in Americans. The question is whether or not Americans will follow anti-inflammatory diets for a lifetime. That is not a political question, but a personal one," he said.
In addressing the 92nd Street Y, Dr. Sears joined a distinguished list of Y speakers, including entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates, directors Oliver Stone and Francis Ford Coppola, former U.K. Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher, entertainers such as Paul McCartney and Robert Redford, authors from T.S. Eliot to Norman Mailer, and an array of scientists and world leaders.
