Penile Prosthesis Surgery Infection Rates Reduced With The No-Touch Technique By Dr. J. Francois Eid of Advanced Urological Care
Date:7/30/2009

After years of testing, Dr. J. Francois Eid, director and founder of Advanced Urological Care in New York City, has refined an innovative "No-Touch" surgical technique that has caused penile implant infection rates to plummet to near zero. Infection rates for the infrequent penile implanter are over TWELVE TIMES as high as Dr. Eid's rate, which is less than 1%

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 30, 2009 -- When it comes to penile prosthesis surgeries, less is more -- less infections, that is. At least that is what Dr. J. Francois Eid believes to be true of his No-Touch Technique. Dr. J. Francois Eid, director and founder of Advanced Urological Care in New York City, developed his innovative "No-Touch" penile prosthesis surgery technique after years of testing. This technique reduces penile implant infection rates to less than 1% by eliminating infection through prevention of exposure to bacteria and normal skin flora. Because skin organisms (e.g. staphylococcus epidermis, staphylococcus aureus, candida albicans) cause the most infections, Dr. Eid believes that eliminating direct and indirect contact (for example, through surgical equipment or gloves) between the prosthesis and the skin will most effectively reduce infection rates.

Post-operative infection remains one of the most dreaded potential complications of penile prosthesis surgery. An infected penile prosthesis must be completely removed and replaced, unlike other infections, which merely require treatment and healing time. Penile shortening, fibrosis and loss of sensation also commonly occur after an infection. Subsequent attempts at re-implantation are extremely difficult with an increased risk of urethral and penile perforation that often requires additional surgery in the future. This is very traumatic for the patient. Additionally, the cost of treating an infected prosthesis can greatly exceed the cost of the original implant.

This complication can be prevented during the initial surgery with Dr. Eid's No-Touch Technique. Dr. Eid, also a Clinical Associate Professor of Urology at Cornell University, believes that "it is the decrease of total bacterial count and exposure to skin, rather than the complete elimination of bacteria from the procedure, that accounts for the success of penile prosthesis implantation." Salvage procedures, where an infected implant is removed and a new device immediately inserted, have been successful in the past even though the new implant is inserted in an infected tissue bed. But when performed without the No-Touch Technique, this results in additional direct contact of the device with skin, thus increasing exposure to skin bacteria.

So the preferred school of thought would be to get it done right the first time and this is where experience counts. Infection rates for the infrequent penile implanter are over twelve times as high as Dr. Eid's rate, which is less than one percent. Dr. Eid, a world-renowned surgeon and a foremost specialist in urological prosthetic reconstruction, has performed more internal penile prosthesis surgeries than anyone in the world, over 300 per year. In fact, Dr. Eid's practice is so refined that he had customized surgical instruments designed for his highly specialized surgeries. Advanced Urological Care has unmatched volume: 3000 implant surgeries over the last 20 years, and is one of the few practices in the world dedicated to erectile dysfunction treatment. And with this type of procedure, experience really does speak volumes.
