Pedal Power Sets the Tone and Tones Legs on the Track at the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience
Date:9/7/2018

Start your engines and race to the new Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience with 12 different sports experiences from which to choose. Pedal power is the name of the game here – whether it’s flying straight forward on Church Brothers Collision Repair Drag Strip Experience or turning left on the miniature Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.

The timing couldn’t be better with a few of the nation’s biggest auto races taking place in Indianapolis. Drag racing fans just celebrated the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Chevrolet US Nationals over Labor Day weekend. Those who are into stock cars, will visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard Powered by Florida Georgia Line (formerly known as the Brickyard 400) on September 7-9, 2018.

Families can get into the action and speed toward the finish line together at the new 7.5-acre Sports Legends Experience at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, which is only a 15-25 minute drive from either of the professional race tracks. Two lanes of each track at the sports complex are dedicated to children and two lanes are dedicated to adults so everyone can experience the thrill of racing to the finish line together.

Special slotted pedal cars representing a variety of dragsters allow children and adults to experience the thrill of drag racing on their own. There is a lit signal to test reaction time and communicate the start of the race. Modern drag races are started electronically by a system known as a Christmas tree light and it’s no different here. In a typical drag race, a column of seven lights for each driver or lane is turned on when the front wheels of the race car interrupt a red beam that triggers the timing equipment when the vehicle leaves the line. It is all about reaction time and those who leave too early or too late can forfeit the race.

NASCAR fans can take the checkered flag and cross a mini version of the Yard of Bricks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Experience miniature oval before celebrating with a fun and unique photo opportunity in the Central Indiana Honda Dealers Winner’s Circle after their big victory. The oval track also has slotted grooves along with miniature versions of Indy- and stock- cars with a pin that goes down into the slot to keep the cars on track.

The primary goal of the new sports complex is to create a family health, fitness, and sports experience that will inspire visitors to be active while creating healthy habits that will stay with entire families for a lifetime.

Similar to tricycles and bicycles, pedal cars require physical strength to move. Physicians say pushing pedals builds leg muscles, engages core muscles, and builds overall body strength.Improves coordination

Even very young children can begin to reap the benefits of regular exercise and enjoy better health. It improves strength - pushing pedals builds leg muscles, engages core muscles, and builds overall bodily strength. It improves coordination. Learning to pedal and steer at the same time teaches kids hand-eye coordination that will help them as they grow. We want to encourage outdoor play. Getting outside gives families a healthy dose of fresh air and encourages them to get away from sedentary indoor entertainment.

Pedal cars are self-powered, meaning that kids have to work to get themselves from one place to another. This involves observation and decision making without input from others, helping them to think for themselves and grow mentally.

Like other ride-ons, pedal cars offer a variety of benefits young children and their parents. Kids get both physical and mental benefits while parents get the satisfaction of watching their children learn and grow as they ride. The pedal cars are a great way to burn off energy. Pedaling around the track will help visitors – especially kids - use up the excess energy that they always seem to have.

Visitors must be at least 42-inches-tall and wear close-toed shoes to participate.

Families will also learn what it takes to be a legend on the track and learn about legends off of it such as A.J. Foyt. He is one of 16 legendary athletes immortalized in bronze within the experience. A lot of families are finding it's a fun way to fuel the passion in their youngsters about racing.
