Patient's journey format drives new edition of vital student nurse manual
Date:4/4/2011

knowledge and skills which enable them to deliver high quality care in the key areas that matter to patients. The evidence-base which supports this work is extensive and will ensure that nurses can be confident when using this manual that they are learning from innovative and cutting-edge services."

And Shelley Dolan, Chief Nurse at The Royal Marsden, has described it as vital reading for all nursing students. "More than ever in 2011, nurses need to be able to assure the public, patients and their families that care is based on the best available evidence" she says. "The Manual provides students with that vital information in a clear, concise and user-friendly way."

The format of the new manual is based around the four stages of the patient's hospital experience:

  1. Managing the patient journey: the context of nursing; assessment, discharge and end of life care; infection prevention and control and risk management.
  2. Supporting the patient with human functioning: communication; elimination; moving and positioning; nutrition, fluid balance and blood transfusion; patient comfort and respiratory care.
  3. Supporting the patient through the diagnostic process: interpreting diagnostic tests and observations.
  4. Supporting the patient through treatment: medicines management; perioperative care and wound management.

Other key features include:

  • Clear, user-friendly, compact and portable
  • Key evidence-based procedures, with the rationale for each action
  • Evidence graded to help students assess its validity
  • Includes multiple-choice questions to help students test their knowledge
  • Accompanying student companion site with interactive multiple choice questions
  • Online edition available from July 2011

Copies of the 1136-page Manual, published by Wiley-Blackwell in partnership with The Royal Marsden Foundation NHS Trust, are available from www.wiley.com and good book shops. T
