Patients and Staff from Serenity Point Rehabilitation “Walk Like MADD” at Grand Rapids, MI Fundraiser

On September 12th, 2015, the Sixth Street Bridge Park in Downtown Grand Rapids was the site of the annual fundraiser for the Michigan Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a 5K event called “Walk Like MADD”. In a show of support for MADD and the mission it seeks to accomplish, Serenity Point Rehabilitation, a holistic treatment center for substance abuse located in neighboring Marne, MI, was a sponsor of the 5K walk, and encouraged patients and staff members to join in for the event, helping to raise money that will help to fund the work performed by MADD.

“In recovery from addiction, learning how to give back to others and to the community is an important aspect of leaving behind the old, selfish habits and ways of thinking,” commented Serenity Point founder Per Wickstrom. “Our participation in the ‘Walk Like MADD’ fundraiser was a great opportunity for our patients to discover the benefit of treating others with care and compassion. We are proud to have been a sponsor of this event, and look forward to working with MADD again in the future.”

A few of the patients from Serenity Point Rehabilitation that participated in the “Walk Like MADD” 5K event shared some of their experiences from that brisk, sunny day. Kirstin, James and Tommy spoke about the impressive group of 150+ participants from all over Michigan, the benefits that they found through their own participation, and their personal reasons for joining in the event. A highlight video featuring footage from the walk and clips from the patients’ interviews is available on the Serenity Point YouTube channel:

The Local Walk Like MADD Event

“Walk Like MADD” is a nationally coordinated fundraising event that occurs in over 60 major cities across the country, raising money to fund MADD operations. Donations will help in the fight towards MADD’s ultimate goal, which is to “end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking.”

MADD was founded in 1980 by the mother of a child who was killed by a drunk driver, and has since been a strong force in the reform of laws related to this deadly practice, including the legal BAC level being lowered from 0.15% to 0.08%, as well as pushing state legislatures to require ignition interlock systems in vehicles of impaired driving offenders. Now a nationally recognized force that stands against the dangers of drunk and drugged driving, MADD continues to work hard in the nation’s neighborhoods and communities to make roads and highways safer, and to push state and federal lawmakers to create and enforce stricter regulations on those who commit the crimes of drunk and drugged driving.
