Meth360 Online features all tools and resources needed to implement the program, including downloadable, multimedia Meth360 presentations as well as an online tutorial offering comprehensive information about methamphetamine and guidance on delivering the presentation. The site also houses a social network, allowing presenters within communities and across the country to coordinate their efforts and share experiences.
"Motivating concerned citizens and parents to learn about meth's dangers and spread the word-especially when talking to kids-is critical to helping curb meth use in the state of Iowa," said Peter Komendowski, President of the Partnership for a Drug-Free Iowa, an alliance of the national Partnership. "Meth360 is a welcome addition to the state's ongoing efforts to fight meth, and we are pleased that Iowa communities will have access to tools and resources to help them work together against meth and future drug threats."
Federal restrictions on the precursor chemicals needed to manufacture meth have contributed to a sharp decline in meth labs nationwide-Iowa alone has experienced nearly an 80% reduction in lab seizures between 2004 and 2006. However, meth use remains prevalent in the state, with the purer, "ice" form of methamphetamine imported from Mexico now constituting the majority of meth used in the state of Iowa.
Meth360 is funded by grants from the United States Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The program was first launched in four states in 2006, and is expanding to ten additional states throughout 2007.
