Breast cancer death rates have declined by 27% over a 15-year period in the U.S., yet many breast cancer patients are not being informed about all of their options when it comes to breast reconstruction. In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery invites women to become more aware about breast reconstruction options at http://www.parkmeadowscosmeticsurgery.com.
Denver, CO (PRWEB) October 3, 2009 -- Thanks to greater awareness, detection and treatment, breast cancer death rates in the United States have declined by 27% over a 15-year period. However, recent research has demonstrated that many women are not even aware of the latest techniques available in breast reconstruction because these techniques are not presented to them. Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, a pioneer in the most advanced DIEP Flap breast reconstruction surgery, recognizes National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October by inviting women to learn more about breast reconstruction options at their new web site, http://www.parkmeadowscosmeticsurgery.com.
According to Park Meadows surgeon Dr. Jeremy Williams, "This year, the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) celebrates its 25th anniversary. At Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, we are committed to the NBCAM goals of increasing education and raising awareness for women facing breast cancer. Even though awareness about many breast cancer issues has improved dramatically in the past 25 years, there still remains a serious gap in education about breast reconstruction options after mastectomy. While the most common form of breast reconstruction is implant-based, many women are unaware that recent advances in microsurgical techniques make it possible to use their own natural tissue for reconstruction. This option provides a long lasting and cosmetically appealing option that avoids use of an implant, which is desirable for some patients."
The Park Meadows surgical team was among the first in Colorado to offer DIEP Flap (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) breast reconstruction, a complex and innovative technique performed by less than five percent of plastic surgeons across the country. DIEP Flap breast reconstruction uses the patient's own tissue and skin to reconstruct the breast, offering patients longer-lasting, more natural-looking results compared to implant-based reconstruction, while avoiding many of the complications associated with older tissue flap procedures. With the DIEP Flap reconstruction, the surgeon uses muscle-sparing and nerve-sparing techniques to limit damage to donor sites. By leaving abdominal muscles intact, the patient can avoid the prolonged abdominal weakness that can result from other flap techniques, while benefitting from a quicker recovery time after surgery.
The Park Meadows surgical team has successfully completed more than 25 DIEP Flap procedures this year, by far the most any surgical team has completed in the Colorado region. Additionally, the team has performed several prophylactic DIEP Flap reconstructive procedures for women with serious genetic risk factors for developing breast cancer who have chosen to undergo mastectomy in order to reduce their chance of later developing breast cancer.
Park Meadows surgeon Dr. Christopher Williams said, "Some women who are genetically at very high risk of developing breast cancer may elect to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy. According to the American Cancer Society, these women may reduce their risk of developing breast cancer by greater than 90%. At Park Meadows, we're committed to helping breast cancer patients, as well as women at risk for breast cancer, to understand all of their options for breast reconstruction."
