Parents In Kansas Can Now Test Their Children For Lead Exposure Using Saliva

% of the identified cases recorded blood-lead levels greater than 15ug/dL in 2008 that percentage rose to 46%.

Lead was banned from house paint in 1978, but many houses in Kansas City were painted with lead paint before the ban. About 80 percent of the houses in Kansas City could still contain lead paint. Because of this, the State of Missouri considers Kansas City an area where children are at high-risk for lead poisoning and recommends all children between the ages of six months and six years be tested for lead poisoning once a year.

Lead exposure is particularly dangerous for children. It can result in anemia, learning disabilities, speech delays, attention deficit disorders, mental retardation, hearing loss, and different forms of renal and neurological damage.

Typically, lead testing products require blood samples from the patient. This is often difficult if the patient to be tested is a child. In such c
