PAINWeek and American Pain Society Return with REMS Training and Women’s Pain Track in 2014
Date:8/7/2014

and Treatment,” which this year is devoted entirely to issues of pain in women. Roger Fillingim, PhD, immediate past President of the APS, heads the APS program activities at PAINWeek. He is Distinguished Professor, University of Florida College of Dentistry, and Director, UF Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence. “We are delighted to present the American Pain Society Track at PAINWeek 2014, our 3rd year in a row,” Dr. Fillingim said. “The theme for the APS Track this year is Pain in Women. Abundant evidence demonstrates a greater burden of chronic pain among women compared to men, and women seek care for their pain more frequently than men. However, chronic pain is typically not considered a women’s health issue. My presentation will open the track, and will make the case for pain as a women’s health issue, reviewing existing evidence that pain manifests differently in women than men. The remaining presentations will provide evidence-base information regarding several different pain conditions that are exclusive to women. Dr. Georgine Lamvu will discuss clinical profiles and their implications for treatment among women with vulvodynia. Dr. Jennifer Hah will discuss biopsychosocial factors in chronic pelvic pain, and Dr. Robert Edwards will discuss risk factors for chronic pain after treatment for breast cancer. This thematic series will provide frontline practitioners with up-to-date evidence-based information regarding pain in women.”

Among other enhancements to PAINWeek 2014, attendees will find a new course track exploring cannabinoid-based therapies for chronic pain, new course concentrations for nurse practitioners, and an expanded 3-day format for the highly popular Pain Educators Forum. Special attention will be given to NSAID and opioid safety, in view of the panoply of concerns that attend these treatment modalities.
