PAINWeek 2009 Welcomes Over 1,000 Attendees

Jennifer Bolen, JD, presents a Mock Trial: U.S. vs Pain Healthcare Clinician. Bolen and peers will present every stage of a trial in which a fictional practitioner stands accused of wrongfully prescribing scheduled drugs. This "mock trial" is all too real for prescribers afraid of government surveillance. Ms. Bolen will also conduct workshops on basic legal/regulatory issues, establishing compliance programs, and risk management protocols.

American Society of Pain Educators (ASPE) convenes its annual meeting, the Pain Educators Forum, within the greater conference. This year the society welcomes the first class of Certified Pain Educators (CPEs) and also presents the inaugural ASPE Educator of the Year Awards.

Sessions on Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS). REMS is the acronym on the pharmaceutical industry's radar since the FDA suggested last year that Schedule II controlled-release opioids and methadone must have a REMS. Most healthcare professionals do not know much about this or how it may impact their clinical practice. Sessions on REMS will be led by key opinion leaders who have participated in recent FDA sessions in Washington, DC.

Pain and Chemical Dependency Assembly: a number of sessions about and around the sensitive issues of pain and chemical dependency will be offered. Additionally, the use of methadone and other opiates for the treatment of pain, and how to monitor for abuse and misuse will be addressed.

The Fibromyalgia Pain Kit, a new resource for physicians, will be the topic of a commercially supported session, jointly sponsored by Global Education Group and the National Fibromyalgia Association. This session will teach practitioners how to properly diagnose and treat their patients who have fibromyalgia using the tools provided in the pain kit. All attendees will receive complimentary Pain Kit.
