Oxnard dentists, Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in Oxnard and Woodland Hills, Calif., regularly give patients dental implants to replace teeth that have fallen out or been removed due to dental disease.
However, dental implants are not immune from dental disease, and the two prosthodontists (experts in restoring and replacing teeth) want the public to be aware of the risks of not using implant specialists to perform their dental work and of not caring for their implants once they are put in.
Dental implants screw into a patient’s jaw bone to anchor a prosthetic tooth, or crown, on top. But bacteria around the implant can cause peri-implant disease.
Peri-implant disease can cause inflamed gums and bone loss if not treated early.
“At Anacapa, we have a unique technique and protocol for keeping implants clean and healthy so they last longer,” Dr. Reshad said.
But patients have a responsibility, too.
Gum disease, smoking and untreated diabetes increase the risks for peri-implant disease.
Patients must also practice good dental hygiene to ensure their implants and prosthetic teeth last a lifetime.
“Dental implants require just as much care as natural teeth,” Dr. Jivraj said. “Maybe even more care.”
Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad are award-winning prosthodontists. They are specialists in implant, cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. Both are former chairmen of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry’s Fixed Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry section
