Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center Expands Liver Transplant Program in Collaboration with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Date:11/16/2015

Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center is collaborating with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology to provide expanded liver disease services to the Southern New Jersey community.

Manish Thapar, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, has been appointed the Medical Director of the Lourdes Liver Transplant Program. In collaboration with Jefferson, Dr. Thapar will lead Lourdes’ team of medical specialists to give South Jersey residents better access to comprehensive, quality liver care.

In addition to liver transplant, expanded hepatology services include the inpatient care of those with acute and chronic advanced liver disease, cirrhosis, management of hepatitis B and C, and the evaluation and treatment of liver masses.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Thapar and the expansion of our Transplant Hepatology Program,” said Dr. Alan Pope, chief medical officer, Lourdes Health System. “Hospital transplant programs are upheld by rigorous standards that must meet strict criteria, such as having a hepatologist on staff who is qualified by the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS). Through the shared service of Dr. Thapar, a UNOS-qualified and respected university physician with the experience and leadership that complements each of our teams, this unique relationship with Jefferson benefits our patients and our organizations.”

“Our collaboration with Lourdes provides a much needed coordination for transplant hepatology services across our region,” said Dr. Anthony DiMarino, Director of Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. “Our goals are aligned in that we are committed to providing the highest quality outcomes for patients. Our collaboration is rooted in the belief that sharing our resources will serve to improve access to care for area residents.”

Prior to joining the Jefferson faculty, Dr. Thapar served as Medical Director of Liver Transplant at Hahnemann University Hospital for the Drexel University School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Missouri and a fellowship in advanced hepatology, clinical research and liver transplantation at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut.

Dr. Thapar is involved in clinical and translational research. He has a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals in his specialty, presentations and funded research.

New Jersey is served by six transplant centers, only two of which perform liver transplantation. Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center is the only solid organ transplant center in southern New Jersey. More than 1,000 patients have received the gift of life at Lourdes.

Dr. Thapar sees patients at Lourdes Medical Associates Southern New Jersey Center for Liver Disease, located at 63 Kresson Road, Suite 105, Cherry Hill, New Jersey. For an appointment, call 856-796-9340.
