Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL), a major acute facility serving the needs of the people of Wigan and Leigh in the north west of England, was recently awarded NHS Foundation Trust status.
Reading, United Kingdom (PRWEB) March 24, 2009 -- Orion Health http://www.orionhealth.com, a leading provider of clinical workflow and integration technology for the healthcare sector, congratulates the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust for being awarded NHS Foundation Trust status recently http://www.wiganleigh.nhs.uk/.
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL), is a major acute facility serving the needs of the people of Wigan and Leigh in the north west of England.
Becoming an NHS Foundation Trust means it is now owned by its members - staff and patients - instead of by the Secretary of State for Health. WWL, which provides healthcare for a population of more than 300,000, is now responsible to its public through an elected board of governors.
WWL operates across three hospital sites, a state-of-the-art outpatients centre as well as administrative offices in Wigan. It offers more than 800 inpatient beds and invests around £200 million each year in a broad range of highly regarded general and specialist acute services.
The organisation has a vision of delivering the best possible healthcare to its patient population across all its facilities. As part this process, WWL developed the concept of a 'clinical workstation' available to authorized clinicians across the trust.
Orion Health's Concerto™ Clinical Portal http://www.orionhealth.com/concerto/ was selected as the web-based user interface for the clinical workstation. This can be accessed by clinical staff across all WWL's sites. It provides secure access to a unified view of electronic patient information throughout the organisation.
In addition, WWL uses Orion Health's Rhapsody Integration Engine http://www.orionhealth.com/rhapsody/ for electronic clinical messaging between information systems.
WWL are now continuing on to the next phase of their Clinical workstation development by working in partnership with the local Primary Care Trust, giving access to local GP's in the WWL catchment area and working with the PCT in developing a "Hospital at Home" system which will allow for complete patient care. They are also continuing further development to give a more complete Clinical workstation environment by including other clinical systems within the Concerto Clinical Portal.
"Orion Health is pleased it has had a part of play in developing the modern, cutting-edge healthcare system at WWL and equally pleased the it can move on and develop the systems and practices that it identifies as necessary for its own community," Orion Health President of North America and EMEA, Paul Viskovich says.
"The ability to make their own decisions will ultimately mean the local community is better served by WWL, now and into the future," Viskovich continues.
NHS Foundation Trusts remain part of the NHS but are accountable to the members of the Trust, which includes stuff, the public and governors. The governors are elected representatives from within the stakeholder groups. As an NHS Foundation Trust, WWL is better able to directly service the needs of the community it serves and now has greater freedom to invest in the development of services and facilities to reflect local needs and priorities.
