President & CEO, Rob Lynch, Joins Canary's Board of Directors
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Orchard Supply Hardware (OSH), a leading regional home improvement retailer, today announced a partnership with Canary Foundation, the world's first non-profit organization dedicated solely to the funding, discovery and development of tests for early cancer detection. Additionally, Rob Lynch, President & CEO of OSH has been appointed to Canary Foundation's Board of Directors.
OSH has named the Canary Foundation as its charity of choice and with the support of their vendor partners is providing major financial support to help create the Canary Institute. The Canary Institute is a "Center of Excellence" for cancer early detection located at Stanford University. OSH will also be hosting its 9th annual charity to benefit Canary Foundation in July 2008. As a new member of the Canary Foundation's board of directors, Rob Lynch will help further promote the organization's mission and work to ensure the effective running of its research programs.
Mr. Lynch joined OSH in early 2004 and has built a proven track record of driving significant organizational and operational change at many of the largest retailers in the U.S. He also currently serves as a member of the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
"We are privileged to have Rob Lynch join Canary Foundation's board and grateful to be chosen as OSH's charity of choice," said Don Listwin, founder and CEO of Canary Foundation. "OSH has a strong presence in the communities they serve throughout California and through our partnership we believe we can bring greater visibility to the importance of early detection."
"Cancer has touched so many families including my own," said Rob Lynch, CEO of OSH. "We are honored to be involved with a locally-based organization like the Canary Foundation that is making a big impact in cancer research. The Bay Area community has supported OSH throughout its 77 years in business and we're delighted to give back to our hometown community in a big and meaningful way that will not only be of impact here, but around the world."
Cancer strikes about one in three women and one in two men in the U.S. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008 there will be over 1.4 million new cancer cases. Survival rates improve dramatically through early detection and treatment, where Canary Foundation's work is focused. Currently, less than 15 percent of research funding goes into early detection, though early intervention is far more effective than late stage treatment. 100 percent of donations to the Canary Foundation go to early detection research activities.
About Canary Foundation
Named after the "early detection" role canaries once played by alerting coal miners of hazardous fumes, Canary Foundation is the nation's only nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to the early detection of cancer. While almost $10 billion is spent annually on cancer research in the United States, the vast majority is allocated to developing new cancer treatments and caring for patients. Surprisingly, little funding is available to researchers investigating new ways to prevent cancer, or to detect it at its earliest, curable stages. Canary Foundation provides funding to researchers who are engaged in developing cancer early detection technologies and protocols. Specifically, Canary Foundation is supporting researchers working toward a standardized family of biomarker signatures for the effective and accurate early detection of all forms of cancer. All administrative and overhead costs are underwritten by the Listwin Family Foundation, allowing 100 percent of contributions to go to early detection research activities.
