Orange County’s New Suspect Identification Tools Meet Resistance from MacGregor & Collins Criminal Attorneys
Date:2/16/2013

Orange County, CA (PRWEB) February 16, 2013

According to OC Government Staff Report, Orange County, California will now be using MorphoTrak’s next generation biometric identification system to spearhead the county’s upgraded identification efforts. MacGregor & Collins, LLP, a well-established criminal law firm based in Newport Beach, takes issue with the “upgrade”.

MorphoBIS, MorphoTrak’s new product chosen by Orange County officials, will be housed in the Orange County Crime Lab and is reported to provide identification of criminals and suspects with unparalleled accuracy and increased productivity. It is specifically used to integrate palm and fingerprints for high-volume searches submitted by jurisdictions and agencies throughout the county.

Orange County’s Sherriff, Sandra Hutchens, feels that this new software has the potential to solve a variety of problems. “The selection of MorphoBIS helps us to meet one of our missions, that of Vigilance in safeguarding our community. Our crime lab will be able to solve more crime, more efficiently with this key crime-solving tool,” said Sherriff Hutchens.

Ronald MacGregor, MacGregor & Collins criminal defense attorney, has represented countless alleged criminals and feels that these types of technological advances are regularly heralded to increase accuracy and efficiency but have costly flaws.

“When Orange County police officers began to carry breathalyzers, many were sure that their accuracy and efficiency was nearly 100%. Many people are now well aware of the inconsistencies associated with breathalyzers as well as their temperamental nature. Many studies have shown that improper calibration and other factors that can affect the device’s accuracy and can lead to false evidence.

“If this new technology proves to be accurate, reliable, and affordable for the county, we will be in full support. Until it its effectiveness has been proven and its officers receive the proper training to ensure its accuracy, we will continue to be skeptical,” said Attorney MacGregor.

A National Institute of Standards and Technology has found Morpho’s biometric matching technology to be the leader in fingerprint accuracy for image-only searches. Time will tell whether or not this new technology will provide similar results in Southern California’s beachside communities.
