Opioid Addiction & Health Care Reform Among Topics Covered at Education-Focused Meeting for TPAs

Presenting its annual Fall Meeting in Cincinnati last week, the Society of Professional Benefit Administrators (SPBA) hosted “Expanding Your Success” with an educational emphasis.

The three-day conference was filled with learning opportunities for SPBA Members as it focused on best practices for third party administrators (TPAs) related to health plan management and compliance, and also delivered the latest industry, policy and legislative information and developments in self-funding. A mobile app was introduced this year to help attendees conveniently plan and navigate their sessions.

“There is so much to stay on top of with employee benefits these days, and TPAs can’t afford to fall behind,” said Anne Lennan, SPBA president. “A main goal of SPBA membership is to help TPAs succeed by keeping them informed with the best, most current information, and this Meeting combines many resources to do that.”

Presenters covered some of the hottest issues affecting the employee benefits industry right now, including the prospects for health care reform changes and the growing opioid addiction crisis. Cybersecurity was also addressed with a two-part series on the methods for assessment/preparation and containment/eradication.

To provide perspective on topics that are critical to the day-to-day operation of TPAs, SPBA partnered with experts who discussed:

  • Litigation matters targeted to health plans and TPAs
  • Identifying and managing risk with administrative services agreements
  • Stop loss contract and relationship management
  • E&O insurance trends
  • Managing the health of a TPA firm

“We work with TPAs every day and fully understand their unique needs and challenges,” Lennan explained. “There is a lot of careful planning that goes into these Meetings to ensure the most helpful information is covered.”

Within the Meeting agenda, SPBA explored topics of growing interest to TPAs like the reference-based pricing structure and HITRUST certification. There were also a variety of workshops Members could choose from to tailor their experience – from TPA leadership to young professionals.

Access to annual Fall Meetings is one of the benefits of SPBA membership. Meetings are designed to give TPAs knowledge and strategies to use in managing self-funded plans, as well as opportunities to interact with peers and share feedback.

“To have this many TPAs together in the same space exchanging ideas and experiences is something that everyone can benefit from,” Lennan said.

SPBA is the national association of Third Party Administration (TPA) firms that manage client employee benefit plans. It is estimated that over 70% of U.S. workers and their dependents in non-federal health coverage are in plans administered by TPAs. The clients of TPA firms include every size and format of employment, including large and small employers, state/county/city plans, union, non-union, collectively bargained multiemployer plans, as well as most industries and professions.
