Open Source Company Kitware Announces New Availability to its MIDAS Server to Further Research Collaboration and Open Science
Date:1/27/2010

Whether performing statistical analysis, driving design with numerical optimization, or just exploring data; accurate and efficient access to data servers is now easier

Clifton Park, NY (Vocus) January 27, 2010 -- Kitware, a company that builds open source platforms and develops advanced research solutions to overcome the challenges of our time, today announced it is opening up the main infrastructure of MIDAS under a nonrestrictive license allowing freedom to install the MIDAS server on location and build on top of the platform for free.

MIDAS is a multi-media server optimized for storing massive collections of large, scientific data and related metadata reports. MIDAS integrates multimedia server technology with Kitware’s open-source data analysis and visualization clients. The server follows open standards for data storage, access and harvesting.

Enables Researchers to Interact with Author Data

MIDAS is Kitware's premier data publication system created to support the emergence of data-centric computing. The effectiveness of a scientific research or engineering design organization depends on its ability to collect, store, process, mine, and visualize data. Whether performing statistical analysis, driving design through numerical optimization, or just exploring data, accurate and efficient access to data servers is imperative for sharing and managing a data repository for research.

To date, one of the most prominent uses of MIDAS can be found on the Optical Society’s (OSA) Interactive Science Publishing (ISP) system. ISP is the first open-access, scientific publication system to allow authors to distribute imaging datasets and advanced visualizations over the Internet for interactive display.

The dissemination of information and data using software and systems falls directly in line with Kitware’s organizational goals and its efforts to advance publishing systems for open science. OSA’s ISP is a unique publishing system that enables researchers to create active publications supporting direct interaction with the data referred to in the publication.

“The type of collaboration and development we have seen with OSA’s ISP has shifted our approach to MIDAS making it even easier to access the server needed for such open and available datasets,” said Julien Jomier, technical leader for Kitware. “Free access to information and data using novel software technology and systems further promotes Kitware’s efforts to advance publishing systems for open science.”

A variety of data access methods are provided including web, file system, and DICOM server interfaces. Local, centralized and distributed batch processing is provided via a scripting language that has been specialized for statistical hypothesis testing. Kitware can customize and install MIDAS at a user’s site or host user data and provide computational resources using its own MIDAS installation.

Several institutions including the National Library of Medicine, National Cancer Institutes, Optical Society and Harvard Medical School currently use MIDAS.

Additional Kitware Resources

Kitware provides a wide-range of support for MIDAS, from basic installation to complete customization. Details can be found here.
