Opelousas General Health System and Cardiovascular Institute of the South, (CIS) Announce Live Case Broadcast
Date:5/6/2016

Kenneth Cochran, DSc, RN, FACHE, President/CEO of Opelousas General Health System and David Konur, CEO of Cardiovascular Institute of the South announced today that Dr. Robert Menuet, Interventional Cardiologist with Cardiovascular Institute of the South will be performing a live case of an Intravascular Ultrasound Guided Coronary Atherectomy.

This procedure involves the removal of plaque by means of a tiny rotating cutting blade through a catheter from one of the main arteries that supply the heart with blood.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing over 370,000 people annually. Early detection and awareness of the warning signs of a heart attack are key to survival. Chest pain or discomfort; upper body pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or upper stomach; shortness of breath; nausea, lightheadedness or cold sweats are some of the major warning signs.

The live case will be performed in the Catheterization Lab at the main campus of OGHS and broadcasted into the 3rd floor auditorium at noon on May 10th. The public is invited to attend.

“It is our hope that by witnessing this procedure it will help to alleviate some of the fear and anxiety that people have regarding treatment of heart disease. We want individuals to see for themselves that treatment is non-invasive, virtually painless and very quick”, said Kenneth Cochran. “Most patients are home within hours of treatment”, he added.
