One Year After Sandy: Affordable Hurricane-Resistant Construction Technology Now Available with Insurance Discounts for Resilient Construction
Date:10/28/2013

Gulf Shores, AL (PRWEB) October 28, 2013

On the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, there are encouraging signs that bode well for consumers and government entities that future storms don't have to have the same costly impact on lives and finances.

Defender Technologies, Inc., of Gulf Shores, Alabama is finishing the first truly affordable hurricane proof home ever built in the United States, using a very simple patented and proven building process. The homes are built to withstand winds up to 200 plus mph, and are virtually tornado and hurricane proof. Video reports of the unique construction process are available at http://www.DefenderTechnologies.net.

Insurance companies and insurance regulators are also taking the lead in encouraging stronger, more-resilient construction by providing significant homeowner discounts for smarter, stronger, and safer construction used in hazard-prone areas. The FORTIFIED Home program supported by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (http://www.disastersafety.org) and Smart Home America (http://www.smarthomeamerica.org) has been adopted in several coastal states, providing homeowners up to a 60% reduction in wind hazard coverage for new homes built to the FORTIFIED standards.

For the Company's CEO, Riji Dixon, it's personal. He and his wife Lynn were almost killed and their neighborhood demolished in a tornado in Ft. Smith, Arkansas several years ago. Since then, the home builder has been searching a system to use in building homes that look great, and at the same time would save lives. Almost a year ago-shortly after Sandy, Dixon and Defender Technologies acquired the US rights to a system proven effective over the past 12 years in some of the harshest weather areas in the world. Developed in the Philippines and deployed in 15 countries now, 50,000 of these homes have been built without a weather-caused failure. Now that technology is available in the US.

Dixon believes the building system that Defender uses will replace the way builders have historically constructed homes. “We are on the cutting edge of building homes that will last for many generations and safety-wise, will surpass anything being built today, and at a similar cost to traditional wood frame construction”

In addition to their superior high-wind resiliency, the homes are waterproof, mold and mildew resistant, termite and carpenter ant resistant, can withstand earthquakes (up to 7.0 on the Richter scale), are sinkhole resistant, and fire resistant, providing additional insurance discount opportunities to homeowners.

Lastly, the homes can provide energy savings of up to 40% compared to stick-built homes, another motivator for new home construction to be built with the Defender Technologies process.

The Company is currently seeking builders to learn and adopt the system with no franchise or license fees. The only requirement is that an interested builder completes a free four-day training program at their Gulf Shores, AL facility.

Dixon said, “We want to make it easy for homebuilders and developers to get involved to save lives and provide the public with safe, affordable housing. With this easy to learn system, and the available insurance and energy savings, we’re excited to play a part in helping diminish the heartache and expense that future storms would otherwise bring.”
