Okaloosa Island Fire Department Will Use Jellyfish Squish to Treat Jellyfish Stings
Date:6/25/2008

Medical Division Officer says " ... when we used Jellyfish Squish we could see immediate relief in our patients from the painful burning and stinging

associated with the jellyfish to skin contact."

SAVANNAH, Ga., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Captain Kevin Carvalho of the Okaloosa Island Fire Department has treated hundreds of jellyfish stings as Medical Division Officer, but he has never seen a treatment that provided any true relief until he tried Jellyfish Squish.

Jellyfish Squish was released earlier this year and is the only product scientifically proven to immediately and completely eliminate the pain caused by a jellyfish sting. After witnessing the relief provided by Jellyfish Squish firsthand, Capt. Carvalho said he will include Jellyfish Squish in all of the Okaloosa Island Fire Department medical gear bags and recommend that the product be used exclusively to treat jellyfish stings.

"Of the methods I have seen to treat jellyfish stings, Jellyfish Squish is absolutely the most effective by far," Capt. Carvalho said. "Rarely have we seen any results from the treatments we have used in the past, which ranged from meat tenderizer to wet beach sand to the credit card scraping method. None of these methods was ever effective, but when we used Jellyfish Squish we could see immediate relief in our patients from the painful burning and stinging associated with the jellyfish to skin contact. This product has made our job easier."

Jellyfish Squish, which has been endorsed by the American Lifeguard Association and has undergone extensive testing for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is a topical anesthetic which neutralizes the toxins released by nematocysts left on the skin when a jellyfish tentacle comes into contact with flesh. As proven in more than 2,500 field tests conducted on beaches in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina, the intense burning sensation caused by contact with a jellyfish tentacle is completely soothed only minutes after spraying Jellyfish Squish on the affected skin. Additionally, the Jellyfish Squish formula neutralizes all nematocysts deposited on the skin, stopping the flow of toxins and preventing toxins from being released later.

Capt. Carvalho said he first used Jellyfish Squish on a hysterical young child who had been the victim of a particularly vicious sting. After trying other methods unsuccessfully, he applied Jellyfish Squish and was stunned as the child stopped crying and began asking to go back in the water.

"Immediately, you could tell there was total relief and I only used a small amount of (Jellyfish Squish) because it was a little kid," Capt. Carvalho said. "Then I used the product on two adults, and they both said it felt much better within moments and walked away from the truck to go back on the beach."

Oceanic conditions are contributing to the proliferation of jellyfish worldwide, and growing coastal populations and heavier tourist traffic to the beaches means greater exposure and an increased frequency of jellyfish stings. Research released in 2007 documented more than 200,000 stings annually on Florida's beaches and there are almost certainly thousands more stings that are not reported by the victims.

J.C. Grayson from Savannah, Ga., created and patented the original formula for Jellyfish Squish in 2007 and perfected the final product with the help of accomplished marine biologists Peter G. Verity, Ph.D., and Richard F. Lee, Ph.D., from the Skidaway Island Institute of Oceanography. Jellyfish Squish is the only commercially available product clinically proven to immediately and completely eliminate the pain caused by a jellyfish sting.

Grayson's company, Coastal Solutions, Inc., began distributing Jellyfish Squish in May, and the product is available in most coastal areas in Florida and the southeastern U.S. There are plans to pursue international distribution to Australia and Europe later this year, and the product is also available via e-commerce at http://www.jellyfishsquish.com

"Through a thorough scientific development process, we created a product that truly eliminates the pain from a jellyfish sting," Grayson said. "Every summer, I saw more and more people helplessly watch their children scream after a brush with a jellyfish, and I knew how they felt because I have seen my own daughter cry out in pain and fear after being stung. After extensive research and testing, we have a product that undeniably eliminates the pain of a jellyfish sting in moments, and it's nothing short of amazing to watch the looks of relief and gratitude on people's faces when they use Jellyfish Squish."
