Obesity Researcher’s Advice Sheds Light on Bariatric Surgery’s Benefits, Notes Dr. Feiz & Associates
Date:5/11/2016

No knowledgeable person ever says that weight loss is easy, and a recent article published May 4th in the New York Times delves into the harsh realities a great many people struggling with obesity face. In the article, Dr. Michael Rosenbaum, an obesity researcher at Columbia University answers some questions pertaining to weight loss.

When discussing the efficacy of physical exercise on weight loss, he noted that, while one can theoretically defeat their body’s slowed metabolism by doing vigorous cardiovascular exercises, “This is not as easy a proposition as it sounds,” and points out that it is all too easy to inadvertently consume more calories than are burned exercising. This, as the article notes, is the principle reason why using exercise alone is generally considered by the scientific community to be ineffective in achieving weight loss. Commenting on this article, the Los Angeles based bariatric surgery center, Dr. Feiz & Associates, explains that, in light of these frustrating truths, bariatric surgery is the only scientifically proven method of achieving significant weight loss results that last for severely obese individuals. Indeed, as few people are able to lose weight and keep it off through rigorous diet and exercising alone, for the average American struggling with severe obesity, bariatric surgery is the only realistic option to attain genuine results, the weight loss clinic notes.

Another factor that makes weight loss incredibly difficult, not to mention frustrating, is the fact that the body’s physiology literally works against the dieter by releasing hunger hormones to encourage regaining of lost weight, Dr. Feiz & Associates explains. Fortunately, they note, one of the most popular and effective bariatric options, the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, may actually often nip this problem in the bud. The procedure, which involves removing a large portion of the stomach to help curb overeating, actually greatly reduces the release of ghrelin, one of the hormones responsible for those all too common hunger pangs that tend to increase as we lose more weight. This results in a “twofer” effect; the dieter experiences fewer cravings because of reduced hormones, and feels physically fuller faster than previously because of the reduced size of the stomach, the bariatric clinic explains. With the help of this procedure, a reliable exercise regimen, and support from the team’s professional dietician, bariatric surgery patients can expect to safely lose a great majority of their excess weight, Dr. Feiz & Associates notes.

With the help of bariatric surgery procedures, a great many patients are able to dramatically improve their physical health and fitness levels on a permanent basis, significantly extending their lives and greatly improving their overall quality of life.
