(PRWEB) February 17, 2010 -- On February 17th, Friendly Cab, the East Bay's largest taxi transportation company, launches a new "Go Green, Ride Clean" campaign with 15 new gas-electric hybrid vehicles calculated to save 1.3 million lbs. of CO2 emissions annually. Oakland's first for-hire hybrid fleet will be driven primarily in communities of Oakland impacted by pollution, and are purchased within the city, supporting the local economy, tax base, and creating "green jobs." Friendly Cab has seen great enthusiasm for its environmental leadership from Oakland residents, and the new hybrid fleet has an extensive waiting list of eager taxicab drivers interested in another type of green: fuel savings.

Though taxicabs play a role in reducing car dependence and increasing the use of public transportation, taxis are driven 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, accumulating hundreds of thousands of miles a year. Each conversion from a traditional Ford Crown Victoria to a new Ford Escape Hybrid can offset around 90,000 lbs. of CO2 emissions a year. Other cities have implemented green taxi initiatives, with 17% of San Francisco taxis comprised of hybrids. Until Friendly Cab launched its "Go Green, Ride Clean" campaign with 15 hybrid purchases, Oakland has had no other environmentally-friendly taxi options, mainly because a hybrid vehicle costs three times the price of a regular taxicab, according to Friendly. Despite the added costs, Friendly Cab plans to replace 2 more regular vehicles with hybrids each month until eventually achieving an entirely eco-friendly fleet.

"It's been a difficult season for taxicab drivers and operators," says General Manager Dhar Mann, 25. "With the increase in alternative vehicle ownership programs, the taking away of taxi stands and with volatile fuel prices, drivers are having a hard time." With Friendly's new fleet of hybrids, taxi drivers can save up to 50% of their total gas expenses, ranging up to $9,000.00 a year depending on fuel costs and number of shifts driven. While taxi drivers will be making less costly trips to the fueling station, customers traveling in Friendly's new greener fleet will also be traveling with a cleaner conscience.
