Nutraceutical Reports Fiscal 2009 Q1 Results
Date:1/29/2009

PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --Nutraceutical International Corporation (Nasdaq: NUTR) today reported results for the fiscal 2009 first quarter ended December 31, 2008. Net sales for the fiscal 2009 first quarter were $39.6 million compared to $41.1 million for the same quarter of fiscal 2008. For the first quarter of fiscal 2009, net income was $3.1 million, or $0.28 diluted earnings per share, compared to net income of $3.2 million, or $0.28 diluted earnings per share, for the same quarter of fiscal 2008.

Operating cash flow for the fiscal 2009 first quarter ended December 31, 2008 was $3.1 million compared to $2.8 million for the same period of fiscal 2008. This operating cash flow, combined with net borrowings of $1.5 million, was used to invest $4.8 million in purchases of property and equipment.

Net sales to many of our domestic and international customers were adversely affected by the accelerated decline in world economies during the first quarter of fiscal 2009. Management was able to partially mitigate the decline through promotional activities targeted at helping Health and Natural Food Stores overcome the reluctance to maintain normal inventory levels. Despite this decrease in net sales, we were able to maintain gross profit margins of 54.1% as a result of our continued focus on raw material sourcing and control of manufacturing costs. Additionally, synergies were achieved through reductions in operational and transitional costs related to businesses acquired in fiscal 2007 and fiscal 2008 as well as year-over-year cost improvements in many of our selling, general and administrative areas."

Mr. Gay continued, "The U.S. and globa
