Nursing Loan Forgiveness Programs -- More Applicants Needed by June 30, 2008
Date:6/24/2008

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif., June 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Executive Director, Diana Fuentes-Michel today urged eligible nursing students who need financial assistance to help them pay for college to immediately apply for the 2007-08 academic year State Nursing Assumption Program of Loans for Education programs. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2008.

"In these tough times, students need to be aware of all available resources to help them pay for their postsecondary education," Fuentes-Michel said. "These loan forgiveness programs encourage students to train in specific career paths where critical shortages have been identified and we urge nursing students to consider applying for these programs."

The State Nursing Assumption Program of Loans for Education for Nursing Faculty encourages qualified students to complete a baccalaureate or graduate degree and teach in a nursing program at a regionally accredited college or university in California. Up to $25,000 can be paid on outstanding student loans for eligible nursing faculty.

Its sister program, the State Nursing Assumption Program of Loans for Education for Nurses in State Facilities, encourages qualified registered nurses and students who will become registered nurses to seek employment in state-operated 24-hour facilities with a registered nurse vacancy rate of more than 10 percent. This program pays up to $20,000 on outstanding student loans for full-time employment service as a registered nurse in an eligible position.

"These loan forgiveness programs are designed to help boost the number of qualified nurses and to help increase the nursing workforce in California," said Fuentes-Michel.

Over the past 53 years, the Commission has provided financial assistance for education to California students and families throughout the State by administering state sponsored grant scholarship and student loan programs. Since 1983, the Commission has provided loan assumption
