Nursing Home Workers Strike Over Employer Misconduct
Date:2/19/2008

Owners Accused of Violating Federal Law, Jeopardizing Resident Care

MILLBRAE, Calif., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Healthcare workers at Emmanuel Convalescent Hospital in Millbrae will hold a 24-hour strike on Friday over several violations of federal labor law, which have included firing pro-union workers without just cause, and slashing employees' benefits and paid time off.

Workers at the facility are concerned these cuts could threaten resident care at the 140-bed nursing home. It was recently purchased by the troubled A&C Health Care Services, which has a record of poor resident care at other facilities it operates. For example, at A&C's Camden Convalescent Hospital in Campbell, over the last two years, inspectors have found widespread problems with fire safety and pharmacy services.
