PHOENIX, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Arizona's Purchasing & Assistance Collaborative for Electronic Health Records, commonly referred to as PACeHR (pronounced "pacer"), has selected Noteworthy Medical Systems, Inc., a CompuGROUP company and leading provider of connected healthcare technology solutions for the ambulatory sector, as one of only two preferred electronic health record (EHR) vendors for providers within the state of Arizona.
The unique PACeHR program was launched in response to the critical need of small and medium-sized medical practices to accelerate EHR adoption; improve healthcare quality, safety and efficiency; and promote a community of information sharing. PACeHR aims to leverage economies of scale, strategic partnering and the power of web-based technologies to ensure that every clinician in Arizona will have access to an affordable, interoperable, CCHIT Certified®, web-based electronic health record solution and services. Representing medical practices, clinics, facilities and other stakeholders, PACeHR's goal is to deliver software and services to three quarters of the Arizona primary care market -- nearly 7,000 physicians in more than 2,000 practices -- over the next three years.
The six-month-long evaluation process involved a selection panel comprising 16 clinicians, along with legal and information technology experts, who assessed 14 vendors against a myriad of high-level criteria. Although PACeHR pre-dated the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), one of its key priorities now is the selection of systems that will enable clinicians to qualify for financial incentives in accordance with the federal Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. Final standards for HITECH's meaningful use and certification guidelines are expected later this year.
"Noteworthy stood apart from other vendors because of their easily deployed web-based system, the number and richness of their Arizona-based interfaces, and their ability to offer a modular approach tailored to meet the heterogeneous needs of the small and medium-sized practice environment," says Dr. Anita Murcko, project director for PACeHR. "The ability for practices to adopt technology in stages is a core component of the PACeHR program and Noteworthy clearly excels in this domain."
PACeHR Board President Roger Hughes highlighted the nonprofit organization's effort to target small and medium primary care practices because they are experiencing the greatest need and most formidable challenges to EHR adoption. "The majority of primary care in Arizona is delivered through small and medium-sized medical practices, yet fewer than 25 percent of these practices use an integrated EHR system."
"Being a Phoenix-based company since 1984, we have a special commitment to see that Arizona practitioners leverage the financial and technological opportunities available for the success of their practices and the optimal health and well-being of their patients," says Susan Hagerty, Noteworthy's CEO and chairman of the board. "Ninety-five percent of Arizona primary care is delivered by practices with 10 or fewer doctors. Our NetPractice line will enable these cornerstone practices to grow into a full EHR, at their pace -- from deploying simple but pivotal demographics and ePrescribing interfaces to eventually exchanging critical healthcare data with local hospitals. This is what an EHR system is all about: building healthcare communities and increasing the ability of practitioners to communicate crucial health data."
All Noteworthy products are being aligned with CompuGROUP's systemic use of best practices, which include feedback from customers and expert groups, as well as CompuGROUP's own experiences on a transnational basis. According to Hagerty, Arizona customers will benefit from this world of experience through the Noteworthy/ CompuGROUP relationship.
Murcko indicated that 10 practices have been eagerly awaiting final selection of qualified vendors in order to begin the process of implementation. These practices were also evaluated against specific selection criteria. At least two of the qualified practices are anticipated to go live in December 2009.
