ess procedure, a small, flexible endoscope and surgical tools are inserted through the mouth and into the stomach pouch. The tools are used to grasp, fold and stitch tissue to reduce the diameter of the stomach opening and the volume of the stomach pouch. No cuts are made into the patient’s skin during the procedure.

“Surgeons do not have to work around or through scar tissue formed from the previous surgery,” Ujiki said. “Scar tissue can be very difficult to a surgeon and ultimately the patient, because it can lead to increased incidence of injury to nearby structures, decrease visualization, and make handling of the stomach difficult. Revising the gastric pouch through the mouth from the inside avoids these problems.”

Most patients will return home the same day of the surgery and return to work the next day. More than 15 million people in the United States suffer from severe obesity. Surgical treatment of obesity has increased significantly in recent years and it is estimated that over 125,000 patients today are candidates waiting for a revision procedure.
