Newly-Released SSA Data Reveals a Record Number of People Received Social Security Disability Benefits in May of 2013
Date:6/13/2013

were approximately 8.8 million disabled workers receiving benefits and that, "as of March 2013, the average monthly benefit for a disabled worker was about $1,129" per month.

In addition, the data revealed that the average payment to disabled workers was $1,129.51 in May of 2013. The average payment to the spouse of disabled workers was $302.52 and the average payment to the children of disabled workers was $337.13. Of the number of disabled workers receiving benefits in May, 4,623,015 were men and 4,254,906 were women.

“The Social Security Disability Insurance program is an important safety net for people who have been injured and for their family members. The benefits provided by this program often make the difference between survival and total financial desperation for people. The data put forth by the SSA does not include information regarding how many beneficiaries had to fight for their benefits," said Jaret A. Spevak, a partner at the firm.

The attorneys at Rechtman & Spevak encourage anyone who is currently disabled and therefore unable to hold a job that generates regular income to look into the possibility of applying for the benefits provided by this program. Doing so could provide families with the security that they need while they work to get back on their feet.
