Newly-Released SSA Data Reveals a Record Number of People Received Social Security Disability Benefits in May of 2013

Given their scope of work, the attorneys at the firm would like to help bring awareness to the recent release of updated data by the Social Security Administration regarding the number of people in the United States currently receiving disability benefits.

The Social Security Administration data can be accessed on its Web site, and the data is updated at the end of each month. According to the most recently-updated data, a total of 10,978,040 people were receiving disability benefits in May of 2013, which is up from the 10,962,532 who were receiving them in April. Both of those numbers were all-time highs. Broken down further, the beneficiaries of this program included 8,877,921 disabled workers, 1,939,687 children of disabled workers and 160,432 spouses of disabled workers in May of 2013, all of which were higher numbers than in April of 2013.

These numbers are similar to those that were published in an article that was released by the Center for American Progress on May 30, 2013. That article was entitled, "The Facts on Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income for Workers with Disabilities" and it stated that there were approximately 8.8 million disabled workers receiving benefits and that, "as of March 2013, the average monthly benefit for a disabled worker was about $1,129" per month.

In addition, the data revealed that the average payment to disabled workers was $1,129.51 in May of 2013. The average payment to the spouse of disabled workers was $302.52 and the average payment to the children of disabled workers was $337.13. Of the number of disabled workers receiving benefits in May, 4,623,015 were men and 4,254,906 were women.

“The Social Security Disability Insurance program is an important safety net for people who have been injured and for their family members. The benefits provided by this program often make the difference between survival and total financial desperation for people. The data put forth by the SSA does not include information regarding how many beneficiaries had to fight for their benefits," said Jaret A. Spevak, a partner at the firm.

The attorneys at Rechtman & Spevak encourage anyone who is currently disabled and therefore unable to hold a job that generates regular income to look into the possibility of applying for the benefits provided by this program. Doing so could provide families with the security that they need while they work to get back on their feet.
