New York State Athletic Trainers' Association (NYSATA) Announces 2013 Award and Scholarship Winners

On Saturday, January 5, 2013, NYSATA held an awards ceremony during its state business meeting. Three undergraduate student scholarships and three professional awards were announced, including the unveiling of a newly-created Kent Scriber Recognition Award.

The Kent Scriber Recognition Award was created to acknowledge those who positively reflect the goals and mission of NYSATA and the profession of athletic training (AT) through acts, promotion, support and/or service. The award is named for its inaugural recipient, Kent Scriber, EdD, PT, ATC. Dr. Scriber has served in multiple roles within AT education and service at Ithaca College, where he has been a faculty member for over 35 years. He has been a role model for past, current, and future ATs throughout the country. Dr. Scriber is the most tenured member of NYSATA and has served the organization in many roles throughout his career. He is a past recipient NYSATA’s prestigious Thomas J. Sheehan Award and is a NSYATA and National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Hall of Fame member. It is only fitting that the first annual award be given to its deserving namesake. "Being recognized by one's professional peers is probably the most rewarding achievement a person can receive and I am most grateful for this honor,” Dr. Scriber commented. “I have been fortunate to have worked for many years in a great profession with so many wonderful people. I am particularly proud of my long-term involvement with NYSATA since its formation in 1976."

The second recipient of the Kent Scriber Recognition Award was E. James Swenson Jr., MD from University Sports Medicine (USM) in Rochester. For the past 20 years, Dr. Swenson has played an integral role in the growth and development of the AT profession in NYSPHSAA’s Section V. He is the supervising physician for the USM clinic-outreach ATs and was integral in the development of AT reimbursement for clinic-based patient care. Dr. Swenson has served as a volunteer physician at the Empire State Games (ESG) for over 20 years and has presented on multiple occasions at the NYSATA Conference. Dr. Swenson acts as team orthopedist for SUNY Brockport and several Rochester-area high schools. He is a founding member of the University of Rochester Sports Concussion Program which includes a Concussion Clinic for walk-in patients. Most recently, he was a speaker at the 2013 EATA/BCBS of WNY Head Injury Seminar.

Paul Lasinksi, ATC, Head AT at Harborfields High School (Long Island) and preceptor in the Stony Brook University AT Education Program (ATEP) was the recipient of the John Sciera Service Award. He currently serves as NYSATA’s Secondary School Committee chair and sits on the Safety Committee for the NYS Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). Mr. Lasinski was instrumental in the coordinated NYSATA response to the NYS Concussion Management and Awareness Act and served as a reviewer on the NYSED’s Guidelines for Concussion Management in the School Setting (2012). The John Sciera Service Award, named after NYSATA’s founder and first president, recognizes members and supporters for their service and/or outstanding contribution to the profession of AT in NYS.

Three undergraduate AT student scholarships were also awarded. The NYSATA Scholarship went to Kara Miller (Leroy, NY) of the SUNY College at Brockport. Kara is in her first year of active clinical experience and has previous AT-related volunteer experience at the Division III Gymnastics Nationals as well as the ESG in 2010 and 2012.

Julian Rivera (Fishkill, NY) of Ithaca College was awarded the Ed Abramoski Scholarship, named after the legendary former Buffalo Bills Head AT. Currently in his second year of active clinical experience, Julian is working toward both his AT degree and his doctorate of physical therapy and was the winner of a prestigious award at Ithaca for his academic achievement and community service.

The recipient of the NATA District 2 Scholarship for NYS was Emily Hunt (Congers, NY), a junior in the ATEP at SUNY Cortland. Currently the president of Cortland’s AT Club, Emily has been on the President’s or Deans List every semester and she has volunteered at the 2012 ESG and Clarkstown High School (NY).

Please join us in congratulating all of our 2013 Award and Scholarship recipients on doing their part to provide service, support, and a bright future to the profession of AT, and therefore to all of society. By positively contributing to athletic training, they consequently promote a high standard of healthcare for all ‘athletes’ - even those who may not wear jerseys.

NYSATA, founded in 1976, stands to advance, encourage and improve the profession of AT by developing the common interests of its membership for the purpose of enhancing the quality of healthcare for the physically active in NYS. Comprised of over 1,200 certified and practicing ATs, NYSATA is the state-wide affiliate of the regional EATA and District Two of the NATA.
