New University of Michigan Study Discovers Obesity Causes Vary By Gender

Levels of obesity related cancers are reaching unprecedented new levels, according to an article from the August 2013 issue of medical publication Oncology Nurse Advisor. According to Karen Basen-Engquist, PhD, a professor of behavioral science quoted in the article, “Obesity is a major risk factor for cancer, and roughly the equivalent of tobacco use.” Overweight patients may even be two to four times more likely to develop certain types of cancer, such as endometrial cancer, in comparison to normal weight patients.

The article further explains that excess weight doesn’t just have an effect on developing cancer, but also surviving cancer. Dr. Basen-Engquist also states that overweight patients may fare worse during surgery and all forms of treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation – “worse by any measure” in her words. Obesity and excess weight can affect cancer treatment in several ways, according to the article, including making it more difficult to diagnose to tumors at an earlier, more manageable stage, affecting chemotherapy since dosages for excess weight are being medically debated, and even encouraging the growth of secondary cancers endangering cancer patients even further.
