Most people are not aware that exposing their eyes to ordinary white light during the night shuts down the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. This can be extremely bad when new mothers get up during the night to care for their baby. However, they may now be able to benefit from the same simple technique that has allowed thousands of people to enjoy improved sleep. Simply avoiding exposing the eyes to the blue rays in ordinary white light during the evening allows the body to produce the sleep hormone, melatonin. By avoiding blue light for a few hours before bedtime, melatonin production can start earlier so plenty is available at bedtime. This makes it easy to fall asleep and sleep will be deeper. It’s as if the mother is in darkness. Also, because the mother is producing more melatonin, it will be present in her breast milk and help her baby sleep better. When new mothers get up during the night and turn on an ordinary light bulb, it does two things: 1) it stops the flow of melatonin and 2) resets her circadian or internal clock. Without melatonin flowing she may find it hard to fall asleep again. Because of the resetting of the circadian clock, her melatonin may not start flowing at the normal time the following evening. If the lack of sleep and this disruption of the circadian rhythm keep happening night after night, it can lead to depression.
By simply putting on eyeglasses that eliminate the blue rays, her melatonin will continue flowing just as if she were still sleeping. It will also avoid any resetting of her circadian rhythm. To avoid similar disruption of the baby’s circadian rhythm, the nursery should be equipped with light bulbs that eliminate the blue rays. When in the nursery, the mother will no longer need to wear her glasses.
Fathers can also develop postpartum depression for the same reasons. Special lightbulbs and eyeglasses for the father will help him avoid any problems. Because pregnant women may begin having trouble sleeping as they near their delivery date, it may be helpful to begin using the glasses and light bulbs well before their delivery date. Avoiding exposure to ordinary white light whenever getting up during the night, will help avoid problems.
