New State Teen Birth Data Released; Declines in 48 States from 2007 through 2011 - A Statement from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy
Date:5/23/2013

Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 23, 2013

Teen birth rates declined dramatically in nearly all states from 2007 through 2011, according to new data released today by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. During that time, the teen birth rate dropped at least 15% in 48 states and declined 30% or more in seven states.

There were also dramatic declines among all racial/ethnic groups as well. Between 2007 and 2011:

  •     Birth rates declined 40% or more for Hispanic teens in 22 states and D.C.
  •     Birth rates declined 20% or more for non-Hispanic black teens in 34 states.
  •     Birth rates declined 20% or more for non-Hispanic white teens in 30 states.

“An already remarkable success story just got better,” said Sarah Brown, CEO of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. “Thanks to teens themselves, the nation’s amazing progress in reducing too-early pregnancy and parenthood continues to get wider, deeper, and more prolonged. Even so, the nation’s still-high rates of teen pregnancy should remind us not to mistake progress with victory.”

About The National Campaign: The National Campaign is a private, non-profit organization that seeks to improve the lives and future prospects of children and families by preventing teen and unplanned pregnancy. Visit http://www.TheNationalCampaign.org to find out more.
