New National Survey: 84% of Americans Over 50 Expect a Family Member to Move into an Assisted Living Community Within the Next 10 Years

Cost and Quality of Care Rank as Top Factors in Choosing the Right

Community

WASHINGTON, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Eighty-four percent of Americans over the age of 50 expect an immediate family member to move into a senior living community within the next 10 years, while 24 percent over the age of 65 expect the same for themselves, according to a new national survey of American attitudes on assisted living released today by the Coalition to Protect Choice in Senior Living (CPCSL). The poll found just more than half (51 percent) expect their parents to live in a senior living community within 10 years, with 15 percent expecting the same for their spouse and 10 percent for a sibling.

Prospective assisted living residents and their family members rank cost and quality of care as the most important factors when choosing an assisted living community. They are also extremely budget-conscious when making assisted living decisions and are looking for ways to keep costs as low as possible. When asked which is more important when deciding on an assisted living community for a family member, "The quality of the community regardless of what it costs," or "The best quality community among those that fit your budget," respondents overwhelmingly (78 percent) chose the latter. Cost considerations are even higher when making assisted living decisions for themselves, with fully 85 percent saying they will chose the best quality community among those that fit their budget.
