BRANDON, Fla., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that Tampa Bay Radiation Oncology announces the grand opening of Tampa Bay's "second" CyberKnife treatment center and "the first" to be located in Brandon - New Millennium CyberKnife Center located at 621 Lumsden Professional Court, Brandon, FL 33511.

Referred to as "the most advanced approach to radiotherapy in cancer treatment available today," the Center will provide new levels of hope for survival to cancer patients throughout the communities of Brandon, Sun City Center, Apollo Beach, Bradenton, Sarasota, Lakeland, Plant City and all surrounding counties in West Central Florida.

According to John R. "Jack" Steel, M.D., renowned for his successful prostate cancer treatment program, the CyberKnife center's technology will open the door to treating cancers which could not be previously treated with traditional radiation. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis without the need for general anesthesia. It provides a non-invasive radiosurgical treatment option with no pain allowing the patients to recover quickly following treatment, most return to normal duties almost immediately. We are proud and excited to offer this robotic surgery for cases otherwise considered inoperable or incurable.

The CyberKnife uses a computer controlled robotic arm which directs a miniature linear accelerator that delivers hundreds of tiny beams from many directions to its target point (the tumor). This process is monitored by a built in image guidance system that provides real-time visualization of the treatment site. Utilizing this treatment system, a patient can be complete with treatment in 1-4 visits (ONE week), whereas traditional treatments take up to 44 visits (4-8 weeks). No Pain, No Anesthesia, No Recovery Time for the patient.

CyberKnife provides new levels of hope for patients with more complicated tumor placements such as those wrapped around the spinal cord or in the Brain.
