New Jersey-based Senior Care Company that was rebuffed after offering to send 50 nurses and evacuation teams to Florida says the deaths of six nursing home residents was a preventable tragedy
Date:9/14/2017

We can appreciate how difficult it was for Florida officials to respond to all the events over the past several days and how to sort through all the offers for assistance. But we are saddened by the loss of these nursing home residents and the trauma that they suffered at the end.

Fulfilling our commitment to patient care, we contacted Florida relief officials in advance of Hurricane Irma and offered to deliver hundreds of nurses and technicians at our own expense to be in Florida within 24 hours and prior to Irma's arrival. Unfortunately, the Florida officials never provided the proper direction on where to send our volunteers, and our offer therefore went unfulfilled. This was very disappointing since these same officials expressed an urgent need for such services.

Similarly, our offer to help evacuate vulnerable people in Florida nursing homes and place them in our nursing and assisted living facilities throughout the United States as a safe haven during and after the storm went unanswered as well.

"It is heartbreaking to see the national news reports of the growing number of the frail and elderly that have suffered and died because of neglect during this storm. That is what we were trying to help prevent, but our offers for help went unanswered and people were hurt. This is wrong," said Lizzy Strauss.

As of 6PM September 13th, we have had no response to our offer to help place residents. We have also extended our help to include sending medical supplies, food and volunteers to the areas and we have also not heard back on this offer as well.

During Hurricane Sandy our company is proud that we survived the month long storm and its after effects through providing support, resources, and operational management of our care centers which resulted in the safe health care of thousands of NJ seniors and their families that we are responsible for. We fed and housed hundreds of employees in need as well. Our emergency plan included providing generators, additional staffing, ample supply of food and medications to our centers as well as twice daily calls with our Administrators and managers to ensure their centers were being run smoothly and supported 24 hours a day. We did not have one adverse event or evacuation during this period and served as a community resource for vulnerable elderly and sick residing at home.
