New Book by Charles Gallannaugh Spotlights The Horder Centre

Crowborough, England (PRWEB) September 13, 2013

Author Charles Gallannaugh’s new book, “Another Way: The Horder Centre Sixty Years of Evolution” (published by Author House) chronicles the history of one of England’s most successful independent hospitals while highlighting the challenges faced by England’s National Health Service (NHS).

Gallannaugh’s history with The Horder Centre is a long one. He first worked with the centre nearly 30 years ago.

“I made the first approach to the Horder Centre in 1985 to persuade them to establish a surgical unit for the treatment of NHS patients,” remembers Gallannaugh. “The success of this venture inspired me to write the history of this remarkable establishment.”

And write he did. In what may be the first and only comprehensive historical biography on the famed health facility, “Another Way” shows how the hospital is able to provide a high quality of care while offering its services to NHS patients free at the point of delivery.

An excerpt from the book:

“Speaking at a conference organized by the think tank Reform in 2012 to discuss what had become known as the ‘Nicholson Challenge’ of making efficiency savings of between £15 billion and £20 billion before 2014, the Chairman of the Commons Health Select Committee and former Secretary of State for Health, the Rt Hon Stephen Dorrell MP was quoted as saying that he believed the challenge could only be met by a fundamental rethink. ‘We have to begin again. The institutions of 1948 are not appropriate to today’s patients. Why are we stuck with community care and primary care, which do the same job? It’s the result of a deal Nye Bevan struck in 1948, and every single person involved in that deal is now dead.’”
