New Book From Praeclarus Press, Breastfeeding, Social Justice, and Equity, Represents Recent Research and Thought on Equity and Social Justice Issues in Breastfeeding

For the past 10 years, the Breastfeeding and Feminism International Conference has brought together a cross-disciplinary group of scholars, policymakers, and activists wanting to address equity issues in breastfeeding, and move the conversation forward. Breastfeeding, Social Justice, and Equity is the third book from a recent series of from this conference.

The opening two chapters of Breastfeeding, Social Justice, and Equity provide an overview of changes in the past decade in U.S. and global policy. The next section focuses on the importance of centering women’s experiences in conversations about infant feeding, with a particular focus on the ways women’s experiences are shaped by race and ethnicity.

After identifying the problem, the next question is what to do about it. Part 3 offers solutions and strategies across the social ecology. Topics include:

  • Improving the gendered context
  • Increasing racial equity
  • Building women’s experiences into practice, promotion, and support
  • Advancing supportive public policy, and sociocultural and community support
  • Advancing health care response
  • Improving education and training
  • Improving male support for breastfeeding

Breastfeeding, Social Justice, and Equity is a highly readable volume that increases our understanding of the forces that influence breastfeeding, and outlines steps we can take to improve outcomes for both mothers and babies.
