Fixing Social Problems can Improve Health

Former environmental specialist shares experiences to help shape a healthier future for the world.

How can Americans stand up to big companies like Monsanto to protect their health and environment? Alaskan environmental specialist Doug Toland believes fixing the country’s social, environmental and health issues are key in helping people create happier, healthier lives for themselves.

Intermixing his memoir with commentary on how to achieve a healthier world, Toland offers possibilities for resolving a range of social and environmental issues in his new book, "This Life's Tempestuous Sea". From his episodes of poverty and marital issues, to exploring the challenging and dangerous outdoors of Alaska, Toland discovered the meaning of persistence. The author illustrates how honesty, love, and extending forgiveness form the core of a healthier humanity.

"Like many people, I've been through tough times, and they affected my physical and emotional health profoundly," Toland said. "One focus of my book is to reveal how each decision we make will have consequences, both good and bad, on our wellbeing. I went from being a married father to a divorced man trying to find love and a new home before I realized what had happened and why."

Episodes from Toland's childhood and his constant search for risky adventure, provide the reader with useful and empowering life lessons. Toland showcases how social issues involving bullying, adversity, risky behavior, naivety, religion, diet and activity affect health. He offers possible solutions to the consequences that arose from these issues in his life.

"I'd love to help Americans, and people worldwide, overcome serious and escalating issues involving poverty, politics, diet and lifestyle choices, obesity, our environment, resource consumption, racism and bigotry," Toland said. “There are compelling problems that come into play with these issues, and I believe very strongly that they are fixable.”
