  • Allowing their children to watch interviews with former addicts, so they can get a starkly realistic understanding of the real world dangers.
  • Establishing and enforce family policies around alcohol and drug use – and be consistent.
  • Developing a family environment that is supportive and nurturing.

“Kids today are exposed to alcohol and drugs at a shockingly early age, and so parents shouldn’t wait until they detect a problem – or one is brought to their attention by teachers, other parents or law enforcement officials – before they reach out and start communicating with their kids,” added Per Wickstrom. “And above all else, the key is communicating instead of lecturing.”
