New 3M CDI System Promotes Lasting Clinical Documentation Improvement
Date:6/15/2009

To assist hospitals in obtaining complete and accurate clinical documentation, 3M Health Information Systems is introducing the new 3M DRG Assurance Program, now enhanced to include a leave-behind software tool, the 3M Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) System, to help hospitals achieve and sustain documentation improvement results over time. More than 750 hospitals have relied on the 3M DRG Assurance Program to improve inpatient clinical documentation, with clients averaging a 2-4% increase in case mix, resulting in a 4:1 financial return

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) June 15, 2009 -- New federal and state regulations that base healthcare payment on quality outcomes are making the clinical documentation process more complex and more critical to the bottom line. To assist hospitals in obtaining complete and accurate documentation, 3M Health Information Systems is introducing the new 3M™ DRG Assurance™ Program, now enhanced to include a leave-behind software tool, the 3M™ Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) System, to help hospitals achieve and sustain results over time.

More than 750 hospitals have relied on the 3M DRG Assurance Program to improve inpatient clinical documentation. Based on the extensive knowledge of 3M consultants, and using peer-to-peer physician education, 3M DRG Assurance prepares a concurrent documentation review team to query physicians so that a patient's severity of illness, risk of mortality, complications and comorbidities are fully captured. Documentation is more complete when a physician responds to clinically driven questions from a well-trained review staff before the patient's discharge.

"When communication is strengthened between physicians, nurses, case managers, and coding professionals, the return on investment can be significant," said Garri Garrison, RN, Director of Acute Care Consulting for 3M Health Information Systems. "Based on an average of results reported by our DRG Assurance clients, we see a two to four percent increase in case mix index within the first year, typically resulting in a 4:1 financial return."

The 3M CDI System, available exclusively with the 3M DRG Assurance Program, is designed to help hospitals achieve ongoing success with documentation improvement initiatives after the initial consulting engagement is completed. The software provides clinical documentation guidelines interactively in a concurrent documentation review setting, allowing instant access to information needed to support documentation decisions.

The 3M CDI System builds on the power of the 3M™ Coding and Reimbursement System, the industry's leading medical records coding system, which has been enhanced with easy-to-access clinical documentation improvement references and edits embedded in the software. The software builds and stores physician queries and provides a process measurement tool to report chart review activities and physician query response rates. Comprehensive reports assist the management team in maintaining performance of the 3M DRG Assurance Program. Most reports can be grouped by financial class, clinical documentation specialist, attending physician, coder and service line.

"Our clients have asked for a tool that will help them continue to be successful after completing the initial DRG Assurance Program," Garrison said. "This new leave-behind software is like having a 3M consultant always at your side to help you stay up-to-date and maintain the improvements achieved during the consulting engagement."
