New 3M CDI System Promotes Lasting Clinical Documentation Improvement

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) June 15, 2009 -- New federal and state regulations that base healthcare payment on quality outcomes are making the clinical documentation process more complex and more critical to the bottom line. More than 750 hospitals have relied on the 3M DRG Assurance Program to improve inpatient clinical documentation. Based on the extensive knowledge of 3M consultants, and using peer-to-peer physician education, 3M DRG Assurance prepares a concurrent documentation review team to query physicians so that a patient's severity of illness, risk of mortality, complications and comorbidities are fully captured. Documentation is more complete when a physician responds to clinically driven questions from a well-trained review staff before the patient's discharge.

"Based on an average of results reported by our DRG Assurance clients, we see a two to four percent increase in case mix index within the first year, typically resulting in a 4:1 financial return."

The 3M CDI System, available exclusively with the 3M DRG Assurance Program, is designed to help hospitals achieve ongoing success with documentation improvement initiatives after the initial consulting engagement is completed. The software provides clinical documentation guidelines interactively in a concurrent documentation review setting, allowing instant access to information needed to support documentation decisions.

The 3M CDI System builds on the power of the 3M™ Coding and Reimbursement System, the industry's leading medical records coding system, which has been enhanced with easy-to-access clinical documentation improvement references and edits embedded in the software. The software builds and stores physician queries and provides a process measurement tool to report chart review activities and physician query response rates. Comprehensive reports assist the management team in maintaining performance of the 3M DRG Assurance Program. Most reports can be grouped by financial class, clinical documentation specialist, attending physician, coder and service line.
