The research showed that sporadic hypertension - whether white coat or masked - substantially increases the risk of sustained hypertension later in life as well as the likelihood of heart attack, stroke and death. White coat hypertension is the name for high blood pressure seen only at the doctor's office, whereas masked hypertension is high blood pressure that is not seen at the doctor's office yet the patient actually does have hypertension.
